Woodturning 150 - Advanced Spindle Turning Techniques

Woodturning 201- Basic Bowl Turning
The next step in woodturning - new tools and techniques used to turn wooden bowls. Includes information on design and multiple techniques for mounting and turning.

Woodturning 301- Advanced Green and Natural Edge Bowl
This course continues basic woodturning instruction series and will build upon skills learned in Woodturning 201. Students will turn both green and dry wood bowls: finished
edge and natural edge, standard and thin walled. Students will focus on using the deep-fluted bowl gouge and learning to “ridge the bevel” to achieve a beautiful smooth cut. Instruction will also include harvesting and preparing locally cut trees for bowl blanks. A $35 cash fee for wood
blank is payable to the instructor at the first class.
Prerequisite: Woodturning 201 Basic Bowls at PHEC.

Woodturning – Cast and Turn an Acrylic Box
Learn how to create and cast your own acrylic blank and turn your own box. Focus on the color design of the blank, turning, sanding and polishing. Prerequisite: Woodturning

Class will focus on the skills needed to turn cross-grained boxes with contrasting wooden knobs or finials.

Woodturning – Element of Design
This seminar and discussion group will review characteristics that are found in recognized and “successful” designs. Evaluate projects of others and your own to discover where enhancement may be considered. Bring examples for group discussion.

Woodturning – Introduction to Segmented Woodturning – Part II
New to segmented turning? Explore adding simple embellishments to your design: veneers, simple feature rings, floating foot, etc. Students will develop their own design and enhancements and build a vessel with wood they provide.
Prerequisite: Woodturning – Introduction to Segmented Woodturning.

Woodturning – Platters
Class will focus on a variety of techniques and tools needed to make platters. Learn various methods for mounting, laying out, and balancing form versus function. This is also a great opportunity to improve your turning skills since we will be working with relatively thin blanks. Prerequisite: Woodturning – 201 at PHEC.

Woodturning – Turning a Hummingbird Nesting Box
A hummingbird nesting box makes a great gift and helps to support the dwindling hummingbird population by providing a safe nesting environment. Students will apply their spindle turning skills and turn to specific dimensions, a challenging but not difficult project.
Prerequisite: Woodturning – 101 at PHEC.
